Jazz Education For Adults
Jazz is an incredible music as it has such a wide range of feelings and emotions contained within it. It ranges from cool introspection to wild, joyous abandon, from the swing rhythms of New Orleans to the vibrant grooves of South America. Every part of the world has its own jazz dialect, its own approach to this broad church called Jazz. We are here to help everyone get involved with this amazing music.
York Jazz Initiative has been created to provide jazz education for adults in the local community of all abilities as well as regular performance opportunities including at our regular concerts. There's something for everyone in our instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles. So if you play an instrument or sing and want to get involved with jazz for the first time or wanting to develop your skills get in touch and get involved!
Ensemble sessions are all 90 minutes and each session costs £9.00
All term time sessions are chargeable
All sessions during Easter, Summer and Christmas school breaks are optional
Our adult education (aged 16 or above) Big Band provides the opportunity for developing musicians to participate in a big band learning experience.
We create a fun and friendly environment so you get the most enjoyment out of rehearsing and performing this great music. Plus you'll have the chance to socialise with like-minded people.

The YJI Choir performs a range of material from classic swing to to jazz rock and latin american songs. You don't need to have an amazing voice or even be able to read music. The Jazz Choir will also collaborate with other York Jazz Initiative ensembles.

Initial is where our adult students learn to develop their jazz improvisation skills. During our sessions we learn about jazz harmony, solo construction, the use of space and how to play within a small jazz band environment. This group is also where our students develop the skills and confidence to use when taking improvised jazz solos.
